Planning a trip to Israel and comparing eSIMs? Three very different kinds of plan hide behind the same word, and the right one depends on one question: do you need an Israeli phone number while you are there, or only data?

The three ways to stay connected in Israel
1. A data-only travel eSIM. Sold by global eSIM apps for almost every country. You get mobile data on a partner network in Israel, but no phone number: you cannot make or receive regular calls or texts, and Israeli services cannot send you an SMS code.
2. Roaming on your home SIM. Your own carrier's international plan or day pass. Nothing to install and you keep your number, but daily fees add up on a longer stay, full-speed data is often limited, and every call to an Israeli restaurant or driver is an international call.
3. A local Israeli eSIM with a +972 number. A prepaid line on one of Israel's own national networks, delivered as a QR code. You get local data, local calls and texts, and a real Israeli number, just like someone who lives here.
Quick comparison
| Data-only travel eSIM | Roaming | Israeli eSIM with a number | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Israeli +972 number | No | No | Yes |
| Local calls and texts | No | Charged as international | Included |
| SMS codes from Israeli services | No | Only to your home number | Yes |
| Network | A partner network | A partner network | Israel's national networks |
| WhatsApp on your home number | Yes | Yes | Yes (two lines on one phone) |
When a data-only eSIM is enough
If you are in Israel for a few days, travel with a tour group, and only need maps and WhatsApp, a data-only plan can do the job. You will rely on WhatsApp calls for everything, and you will need someone else's number whenever a business asks for an Israeli one.
When you want an Israeli number
A local number makes daily life in Israel much easier, especially on a longer stay, a family visit, a study program or a business trip:
- Restaurants, clinics, rental agencies and many other businesses confirm bookings by SMS or call you back on a local number.
- Israeli apps and websites often send a verification code by text message before you can sign up or pay.
- Calling a taxi, a hotel or a friend's Israeli mobile is a local call, not an international one.
- Friends and family in Israel can call you without paying international rates.
What to check before you buy any eSIM
- Your phone supports eSIM and is unlocked. See our guide Does my phone support eSIM?
- When the plan's days start. Some plans start when you install them, others when you buy. Plan your purchase date accordingly.
- How much data you really need. Navigation and messaging use little; video calls, streaming and a hotspot for a laptop use a lot.
- Whether you can recharge and keep the line for your next visit.
The SimOnline Israeli eSIM
SimOnline sells prepaid eSIMs from Israel's national networks, Cellcom, Pelephone, Partner and HOT Mobile, with a real Israeli +972 number, local calls and texts, and large data plans. There is no ID or passport check: you enter your name, an email and a phone number from any country, and pay with an international Visa or Mastercard. The QR code appears right after payment and is also sent by email.
Plans start at ₪64 (about $20) for 10 days, and 30-day plans start at ₪104.90 (about $33) with 300 GB or more. The plan's days count from the purchase, so buy it a day or two before you fly. There is no contract and no auto-renewal, and you can recharge the same number online for your next trip.
