Will your phone work in Israel, and what is the cheapest way to use it? This guide explains roaming, local eSIMs, WhatsApp, and when an Israeli phone number is worth having.

Will my phone work in Israel?
Almost certainly. Israel's mobile networks run on the same 4G and 5G standards used in the US, Europe and most of the world, with coverage across the cities and main roads. The real question is not whether the phone works, but how you pay for using it.
Option 1: roaming on your home plan
If you do nothing, your phone roams on an Israeli partner network and your home carrier bills you. Many carriers sell a daily international pass or a travel add-on. Roaming is convenient for a short stay, but check before you go:
- the daily or monthly price, multiplied by the days of your trip;
- how much data is included at full speed, and what happens after that;
- the price of calls and texts to Israeli numbers, which are international calls on your home plan.
Option 2: a local Israeli eSIM
A prepaid Israeli eSIM gives you a local line on one of Israel's national networks for a fixed price, with no daily fees. You install it from a QR code, keep your home SIM as a second line, and choose which line to use for data and calls. Compare the plan's price with your carrier's daily pass multiplied by the days of your trip; on a trip of a week or more, a local plan often comes out cheaper and with far more data.
WhatsApp with two lines
WhatsApp is the main way people communicate in Israel, from friends to businesses. When you add an Israeli eSIM, WhatsApp stays linked to your home number: your chats and contacts do not change, and the Israeli line simply provides the data. You do not need to move WhatsApp to the new number.
When an Israeli +972 number helps
- Bookings. Restaurants, clinics, tour operators and rental agencies often confirm or call back by phone or SMS.
- Verification codes. Israeli apps and websites frequently send a code by SMS before you can register or pay.
- Local calls. Calling a taxi, a hotel or an Israeli mobile is a local call.
- Being reachable. Israeli friends, family and colleagues can call you at local rates.
A data-only travel eSIM does not give you a number, so for all of these you would still depend on your home number and international calls. We compare the options in Best eSIM for Israel.
Practical tips for your phone in Israel
- Israeli mobile numbers start with 05. From abroad, dial +972 and drop the first 0 (for example +972 5X XXX XXXX).
- Free Wi-Fi is common in hotels, cafés and many public places, but do not count on it on the road.
- You will use data every day for maps, rides and messaging, so pick a plan with room to spare.
- Turn off roaming on your home line after you switch data to a local line, to avoid surprise charges.
